Time management skills for the workplace

How you tackle time management and work practices determines your level of success. Find out more about improving your productivity.

Where does all the time go?

Twenty four hours seems a lot, when you think about it. But most days, it seems grossly inadequate. Why? Let’s take a realistic view of the time you have.

First off, you don’t really get 24 hours per day. If you factor in 7 hours sleep, you’re left with only 14 hours of waking time.

Even those 14 hours can’t be used entirely for productive work. There are many things that a human being needs to do. And these things do take up plenty of time.

Like taking a shower (say, 10 minutes), answering nature’s calls (say, 30 minutes), dressing up / getting ready (say, 10 minutes), eating (30 minutes), time to relax (1 hour or so), family / social time (say, 1 hour).

So now what do we have left?

We started off with 14 hours of waking time. And when we add up all the time that we accounted for above, it comes to 3 hours and 20 minutes.

That’s three hours and twenty minutes. We put it down in both numerals and words so that you can get a real feel for the figure.

Now if we subtract this figure from our 14 hours of waking time, what do we get? We are left with just ten hours forty minutes. In figures that is 10 hours 40 minutes.

And that is a fact. That is all that we get. So from now on don’t you think that it would be more realistic to say that we have ten hours and forty minutes to accomplish a day’s work, rather than saying we have 24 hours! If we continue to believe that we have twenty four hours, then we deceive ourselves and perhaps become even more lax with our time.

Now that you know how much time you actually have, find out the real secrets of how you can maximize the use of your productive time.
