Time management skills ::
how to organize
Discover how to organize your work and boost your productivity in less than 12 minutes a day
Most people give little or no thought to how to organize their work. This is partly the result of poor time management skills. Yet, there is a simple secret to how to organize your work day.
It's a secret that was passed on to Andrew Carnegie in the early years of the 20th century. Carnegie apparently said that this was the single most important thing he learnt in his business life. After trying it himself, he is said to have paid 25,000 dollars to the man who gave him the secret. That was a large sum of money back then.
So what is this secret? Here it is. Every day, make a list of the top 6 things you want done the next day. Prioritize that list.
When the next day comes around, start with item no. 1. Stay with it until it is done. While on item no. 1, pay no attention to item nos. 2, 3, 4, etc. If any emergency comes up, deal with it, and go back to no. 1.
Once that's done, go on to no. 2. And so on till you reach no. 6 on the list.
If anything is left over from the list, say, items 5 and 6 didn't get done, simply include them in the next days list. At the end of the day, develop a similar list for the next day. Include whatever got left over. Prioritize the list. And do it in the manner described above.
The beauty of this system is that it forces you to think through what the most important things are that you could do. And it keeps you on focused on finishing those things in order of priority.
Most of all, it prevents you from getting so caught up in day-to-day firefighting that you neglect the really productive, value-added activities that contribute to your real goals. If you have any experience in running a business or handling a responsible job, you know just how critically important that is.
It's very easy to get lost in the 'thick of thin things', as someone put it. This system prevents that.
People who consistently use this simple system report that it results in a dramatic improvement in their productivity. They say it vastly enhances their quality of life.
Once you do it a few times, you'll find that the time spent identifying and
prioritizing the six things is really less than 12 minutes!
This may be the single most important secret of how to organize your work and your life that you'll ever come across. Be sure to use it starting today!
